Buildable Hours 2012
Buildable Hours, Inc. is a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization of law firms that commit financial and physical resources to build homes with local Habitat for Humanity organizations. It was founded in 2001 by Roger Goldman, a partner in the Washington, D.C. Office of Latham & Watkins, and Scott Michel, a partner in the Washington, D.C. firm of Caplin & Drysdale.
Buildable Hours 2012 brings together the financial resources of legal employers and the volunteer labor of summer associates, attorneys and low-income homeowners to build and rehabilitate houses.
Participating firms spend one day or more on a designated construction site with a combination of lawyers, summer clerks and staff. The financial commitment is less than many traditional summer associate activities and allows firms to give back to the Los Angeles community. This unique experience helps the firm’s staff get to know their summer associates in a different setting, observe the participants’ ability to work together as team players and to tangibly demonstrate their commitment to public service.
Buildable Hours will take place in June and July, 2012. Firms will rehabilitate a foreclosed property in the city of Lynwood, CA, which will be sold to a low income, hard working partner family.
